I sent some email to ask consulting firms what they were looking for in a referral consultant. They had two criteria that a potential hire could meet

1. A knowledgeable resource with more than one implementation under their belt

2. A resource with certification (i.e Epic Certifications, Advanced Degrees, Clinical Licensure)

Additionally, they found the very best resources had previously worked at a healthcare organization in a full time capacity and had previously had at least one initial experience as consultant.

What does this really mean?

If you are currently looking to break into the consulting world you have one goals, find a healthcare organization implementing Epic and get hired to help implement the system. Every recruiter I have talked to says their number one criterion is finding someone who has already gone through an implementation. I worked with another analyst that jumped onto the Epic bandwagon with a healthcare organization that had already implemented a majority of its clinics and hospitals. I was the only certified member on the team. He went to Epic and was certified in professional billing. Two months later he was offered a job making $120,000 as a consultant. Guess how long he stayed as an Epic certified analyst there?

So my question for you is, guess how a much consultant is worth if they went through a full implementation cycle and actually have a little experience under their belt? I will answer that for you, a heck of a lot more than $120k.

What If I Did Not Get A Certification During The Implementation?

Many people unfortunately did not get to jump in during all of the build phases of an implementation. They may have come in during optimization or some other phase of the project. What is a potential consultant to do in this position?

There are other ways to prove experience during an implementation or even during the post go live optimization. One of the major occurrences after an Epic implementation is the massive volume of optimization that occurs after the Epic EMR go live.

My recommendation here is to gain a position of leadership, management or practice manager. The second alternative is jumping on to an optimization team. This could be something along the lines of Six Sigma or a process improvement team. My favorite here is the process improvement team.

I have known two consultants who used a process improvement team to leverage their experience into a consultant position and they were both under 35 years old. The fact is any experience gained improving the day to day activities of other teams generally results in increased revenue or decreased AR for an organization. Slap big numbers behind the results of a proven process and you are looking at an impressive resume and a nice story for potential clients you are interviewing with.

If you truly want to advance into the consulting world, you can easily make the transition if you do the following things.

· Take on several projects that track metrics and can show major improvement in at least one metric

· Join a team that will send you for Epic certification

· Work in a leadership position heavily involved in tracking AR

Sterile processing departments are, more often than not, underserved by their administrative leaders. In many cases, this is resultant from two specific reasons: 1) Lack of understanding on the part of hospital and other healthcare leaders of the invaluable role played by the sterile processing department and; 2) the fact that SPDs are non-revenue generating departments but rather result in a heavy financial “burden” to a facility. Never mind that the departments serviced by the sterile processing department are generally all revenue generating and, as such, when sterile processing is less than efficient with respect to productivity, actual revenue generation may be impacted in the respective service areas.

The results of such thinking as above are all too typical-understaffed SPDs, reduced productivity, process failures, increased error rate (and reduced risk to patients), etc. Rather than seeking long-term solutions to such issues (e.g., hiring on more staff, providing for material needs of the department) administrators all too often seek short-term solutions such as outside, independent third-party consultants.

There are several major issues with utilization of third-party consulting firms and such consulting bodies that the administrator need consider. First and foremost, most so-called SPD consultants in the employee of third-party consulting firms are either not actively engaged in the field of SPD or unqualified. Second, most of the consulting programs offered by such vendors are merely a service created as an entry point into a facility to garner business and vend more profitable products, e.g., repair services, instrumentation sales, etc. Such platforms typically lack substance and cause more harm than good in the SPD department.

Another issue with such vendor provided SPD consulting is that of cost. Programs like these often require that a facility commit to a lengthy contract involving substantial cost. The problem with this is that, a true expert in the field of sterile processing, one who is both qualified and has extensive experience within the department, could enter a department, evaluate and diagnose the problem areas, and present solutions to correction in very short time frame (at most a couple of weeks) and of course this could be done at a fairly reasonable cost. This is so in that problems in the sterile processing department tend to be universal and readily amendable by a qualified consultant. Vendor solutions are not so geared as to provide quick and cost effective evaluations and corrections.

The above issues have emerged in large part because there was, until recently, no regulation or set standard for those marketing themselves as professional SPD consultants. Now, however, this is changing with the emergence of professional SPD consulting certification, made available to qualified individuals currently working in the field with options available for vendors as well.

When seeking out a consultant, ensure that the potential candidate holds the Certified Professional SPD Consultant credential. The Certified SPD Consultant credential was launched by the Advisory Board of the Central Sterile Processing Initiative with the goal of standardizing and elevating the profession as well as providing a standard of competency to ensure that a quality product is maintained in sterile processing consulting.

A fourth mistake that companies commonly make during the IT consulting process is not being as forthcoming as possible during the needs assessment process. Just as you wouldn’t present your aches and pains as being rosier than they are to a physician, portraying your company in the best light possible to an IT consultant could mean that you miss out on critical solutions. If your human resources department is a technical mess, don’t be afraid to say so. An IT consulting firm isn’t there to marvel at your problems; it’s there to fix them.
